Student Expectations
The performing arts are Co-curricular activities. This simply means that part of the work takes place during the school day, and some takes place outside of the school day. All efforts and achievements are evaluated and applied toward the students’ course grade. To take full advantage of the benefits that Music Education has to offer, all students are expected to prepare for and participate in all co-curricular activities related to the course they are registered for. Students receive an activities calendar on the first day of school. All known performances for the year are on this calendar. No absence will be excused unless it is an extreme emergency, or prior notification has been received by the director a minimum of two weeks in advance and a compromise can be agreed upon. ZERO CREDIT IS GIVEN FOR UNEXCUSED ABSENCES. It is the responsibility of the student to communicate schedule conflicts to the teacher. Absences will be evaluated on an individual basis. If you have a part-time job, request these dates off work. Work is not an excused absence.
Classroom Rules
1 No food or drink is allowed in the classroom, with the exception of a re-sealable container of water.
2 Phones, tablets, etc. are not allowed to be used during rehearsal. Please keep them in your locker.

All performances are Level 1 and all Daily Participation/Preparation Points are Level 2. The director will categorize all other assignments and assessments at the time they are assigned.
Performances (Level 1)
- Each band performance is worth 3 points. 1 point is for preparedness (knowing when performances are and the appropriate attire. If the director is asked about something addressed in class, they will lose this point), 1 is for behavior (representing our school and community well and demonstrating appropriate concert etiquette) and 1 is for participation.
Daily Participation/Preparation (Level 2)
- All students begin each day with three points. They will maintain these as long as they are prepared, they participate and they demonstrate appropriate behavior in class as outlined in the classroom rules.
Various Assessments (Level 3)
- Written coursework
- When written work is assigned during class, or for homework, it is to be completed and turned in by the due date specified. Points will be deducted for work turned in past the established due date.
- Individual Performance Assessments (I.P.A.)
- Each I.P.A. is worth 3 points. These are individual playing quizzes in which students receive written feedback from the director. These will be administered during class 1-2 times per semester. Music will be assigned in advance and the students should prepare these to the best of their ability. If a student prefers to take an I.P.A. outside of class time, they may schedule a time with the director, but must do so within the same week that the I.P.A. was given in class or they will receive zero for the assignment.
- Quizzes & Tests
- These may be written or playing assignments, individual or group, as deemed necessary by the director. They may be announced ahead of time or they may be unannounced “pop” quizzes.
Final Exam [Level 4]
- Other high school courses include a semester final exam. Band is no exception. In addition to a written section of the exam, the director reserves the right to consider handing in music, uniforms, instruments or even a performance as additional sections of the exam.
Ensemble Uniforms
All clothing worn for performances must be deemed appropriate by the director, as defined by the Student/Parent Handbook. Inappropriate attire may result in zero credit awarded for that particular event.

- DO NOT WASH YOUR UNIFORM. A $20.00 fee is assessed each year and is due one week from the first day of school. The school issues trousers, jackets, hats, plumes and gloves to all students. The fee also covers the cost of the 2018-2019 marching band t-shirt. Each student is responsible for providing plain black socks to be worn as part of the uniform at all times. The uniform is to be worn only at such times and places as designated by the Band Director or High School Principal. The uniform is to be worn completely at all times when the student is located outside of the band room on performance days. Hats may be removed when riding in automobiles. In cold weather, students may wear additional thin layers under the uniform in order to stay warm. To avoid damage to the uniform pants, jeans or other pants cannot be worn under the supplied trousers. Uniform demerits may be assessed to a performance grade if a student fails to wear the proper uniform at the proper time. In the event the uniform, or any accessory, is damaged due to negligence, other then reasonable wear, the student will be held responsible for the amount of the repair or the replacement cost.
